Dentistry for Donkeys

Donkeys can get problems with their teeth at any stage of their lives so a dental check every 6 to 12 months is a great way to identify these issues and prevent them getting worse. You may never put a bit in your donkey’s mouth but that doesn’t stop him having tooth and gum problems and the pain that goes with such conditions.

The most important thing to remember, unlike most horses and ponies, donkeys are EXTREMELY STOIC! Donkeys feel pain just like horses but rarely show outward signs at all. If a donkey looks dull it is usually VERY sick and requires URGENT veterinary attention. A donkey that stops eating because of dental pain can become very ill very quickly with a condition called hyperlipaemia. This is LIFE THREATENING.

Therefore, if a donkey has dental pain you may well see nothing at all, which is why it is even more important for them to have regular dental checks.
